Avery Peak Friday July 2 11.50h

After Hamlin, Baxter and North Brother last week, I had no specific plan to make the three remaining summits. Tuesday June 29, I started watching the weather forecast for our long weekend which start Thursday, July 1. The weather seems to be nice for Thursday and Friday. In the afternoon the forecasts change, 30% chance of rain for Thursday and still sunny Friday. Wednesday noon, the decision is made, we will leave tomorrow morning for Maine to do our 3 peaks.

Thursday morning we leave the house early to go directly to do Abraham, by Fire Warden's Trail. We had 5 dressing-undressing sessions . The temperature was weird all day. Brought us a beautiful blue sky, then cloudy and then rain. That explains the dressing-undressing sessions.

With a good night's sleep, I get up and draw the curtains to see the sky. The sky is completely blue and I open the door to feel the temperature. It is ideal. After breakfast, preparations, we left the motel room for the Stratton Brook Pond Road, formerly Stratton Brook Road. This path is described in the guides in very bad condition, but we can say that these guides are not updated. It is a nice dirt road with no hole. We parked the car and we were en route to reach two mountains of The Bigelow, West Peak and Avery. The view that we have from the trail towards Sugarloaf is fantastic. We have ideal conditions today. The visibility that we have this morning was almost out of sight, almost no humidity or fog. We make our first stop at 3.6 miles of our departure, knowing that the climb will begin after that. At this moment an idea came to me. Looking at my watch and saying that with the distance that remains, it would be fun to complete our 115 to 11.50h, you know what I mean, all the possible numbers of 115. After the junction to West Peak, we meet somebody, we chat a good time and we continue our journey. Once we reach the top, WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is so beautiful. I begin to take some pictures and suddenly I look Annie, she is sobbing and told me that it is the most beautiful summit of the 115 that we did and we are fortunate to have the privilege of seeing it. Annie is very emotional today. Must say that this view is magnificent with all these mountains, Flagstaff Lake, the weather, the view is almost out of sight. We are in shock, last Friday with Baxter and the Knife Edge and now here, we are overjoyed.
After a few minutes of admiration, emotion and rest, we head for Avery Peak. Soon as we reach Avery summit's, as usual at the top I did a waypoint. I looked at the time of the waypoint: 11.50.02h, I had completely forgotten this idea of arriving at this hour, but we are. After the mutual congratulations and a kiss, we have taken pictures near the sign because we had West Peak and Avery Peak for us all alone. We spend a good time, we take our lunch, but no champagne to celebrate. After a last glance at this beautiful panorama, we take the path to return to the car and go home.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this stage of Maine, Vermont and the Catskills.
We are very proud to have visited the 115 peaks and we will proudly wear the patch on our bags. :)
As I often say, to us the lists are only a pretext. For Annie and I, what we love is to discover new places. Now that we have completed the 115 list, is not the end it this the beginning.

After meeting you so many times on the trail, I now almost expect that I will see you hiking every time. I'm sure we will meet again, since this is only a beginning!

Congratulations to you both!!! I am very happy to see that you had a good weather day in the Bigelows. That view down into Carrabassett and then on top to Flagstaff Lake is incredible!!! Well done and I hope to cross paths with you again. I must have to hike with Joe more often, that is if he'll wait for me to catch up!

Very good to read and think about, Yvon. I'm sure maybe both but especially Annie thought that she would never accomplish such a thing years ago. That you both got to share every step of the way together must mean so much to both of you. It is so good to read and think about how happy you both must feel. It is also good to see what a splendid weather day you had and what great pictures came out.:)

Corry, I am pleased to see that even in English, which is not my mother tongue and wich is not very good, you understood what we feel and what hiking is for us. :)

Congratulations to you both. Such an accomplishment, and that you did it together is so meaningful. Sharing the beauty, the joy, (and the pain) with the one you love... I can tell from the way you write about it that you know how blessed you are.

Congrats Yvon and Annie :drink:

You became 46ers in 2008, NH48ers in 2009, and now 115ers in 2010. I can't wait to see what you two accomplish in 2011

Thank you, Jim.

I see that you keep all our statistics from previous years. :)This is exactly the plan that I had for 2010 since we completed the 48 NH.
But now, I have nothing planned for 2011. Apart from that we will make some winter peak in ADK. But we want to return to places we have liked, but by other paths. Place where the temperature does not allowed us to appreciate the beauty of the site.
