View Full Version : Peru, NY-suggestions?

It's possible that I might be in the area in the near future based on an unconfirmed invitation. However, on the map, Peru looks a lot closer to Lake Champlain than the peaks. Also, I think the hostess would be up for a reasonably moderate day hike. Let's say @10 miles flat or less if substantial elevation gain. If anyone has any suggestions for something that meets that loose criteria, I'm interested. Also, if there is appropriate snow cover, XC ideas of similar physical demand are welcome.

Fairly easy - Poke-O-Moonshine
Moderate - Lyon

Both have climbable fire towers and both just happen to be on the Views And Brews (http://viewsandbrews.com/hikeb20.html) list! :D

Neither one is particularly ski-able, but Lyon could be a great butt slide!

I noticed ski tracks on Lyon last month, pretty much all the way from bottom to top. The trail is obviously maintained off-season by [presumably] one or more local skiers. Also noticed evidence of tracks heading into the woods and also on the new summit access road. I've never been on that road (other than at the top) and don't even know where it starts, but I'd guess that it must be skiable. Maybe somebody else on the forum knows how to find the start of the road?

Did they ski up or down, or both? It's pretty steep, but then again I'm not a skier!

I found Lyon in the NY Atlas & Gazetteer, but I can't find the other. Do you mean Peekamoose?

Nope, that's its real name. Amazing cliffs there too!

I'll be going there this weekend. Thanks for all the input. Can anyone comment on the local snow depth?

I would say Poke-o-moonshine would be a preferable hike over Lyon. The trail head for Lyon is a little tricky to find and it's a good steep climb to the top.

I have never been up P.o.M. but by all accounts it's a non too stressfull climb with nice views. Also it's only about a 10/15 minute drive south of Peru just off the Northway.
By the way the VFTT group at Spences BBQ ate out at "Crickets" in Peru....nice restaurant with good service.

We had to park on the main road. The trailhead is at the Southern end of the campground. Don't actually go in, just walk to the Southern end along the main road.

The hike up Poke O Moonshine is pretty easy. It should take you less than 1 hr to reach the summit. There is a fire tower (not open) on the summit. Since the campground is closed at this time of year, no issues there. During the time the campground is open, they frown on parking on the road in front of the campground. You can park in the campground. Also, the trail head is part of the campground and you are supposed to pay a day fee (minimal) to access the trailhead. Last summer when I hiked here, the campground steward was stopping folks and making them pay. I did not mind paying since I used the showers there when I was done (I hiked during Spencers annual BBQ) and all of the NY state campgrounds I have stayed at have been so nice, I not do mind supporting them with a small fee.

There is a fire tower (not open) on the summit.

It was open last October.

The cab was not open when I was there in August but you could climb the stairs.

Sometimes the cabs open other times its nt. Some times they have sewerds up there too. Its a nice hike. Sees lots of traffic too. Other epossibilities aroudn the area are silver lake mountain. THis is a very short but plesent hike with some good views. Catamount id a great hike but tricky in the winter. Its not marked so you kinda have to know your way and the chimney is tricky if there is lots of ice. I live just out side of Peru, but I'm only about 20 min or so down into the actuall high peaks and there are lots of nice places to go over in wilmington also.
