I hiked up Sherrill today (what a glorious, but COLD day :D ) and when I got to the cannister there was no pens or pencils in it and I didn't have anything with me! :( Could anyone making the trek in the near future please put an extra writing tool in your pack to leave there...

Hey Terri, Mudhook and I were up there Sat.3/11 and there's all kinds of pens and pencils now. We also found a couple on the ground that must have been dropped and lost in the snow that was mostly melted around the cannister.

RockySummit, they're known as the "escapees" It is a rare known fact that being cooped up in a metal tube all the time, every now and then being exposed to the air is not a healthy way to live. Kind of like a sedentary lifestyle, so it is a rare but known occurance that occasional canister pens (and pencils) will try to "make a run for it" so to speak. Perhaps to seek out other pencils and pens at other peaks, such as North Dome. Do you think they were leaning towards the direction of North Dome. It is a unfortunate act that the bushwack skills of certain pens may not be up to par and they sometimes are found dead from exposure in the spring, like you seem to have had the unfortunate experience of coming upon such tragedy.

I've proposed that the Catskills 3500 group install WiFi hotspots near all the bushwack 3500 peaks so that at least these pens/pencils can log onto adkhighpeaks/VfTT and learn the skills necessary to survive outside the sheltered life of a canister pen.

Is it April 1st yet?? :)

Hey Jay, you make a lot of excellent points here. All I know is if I were sent to solitary confinement in one of those things I'd definately wind up with the same destiny, wackin' skills or no wackin' skills. Ha!

Some of the pencils are shy and hide in the bottom of the canisters when people are around. This is why I carry a 5 gallon plastic bucket when hiking so I can stand on it to reach the canister and feel around inside for any hiding writing utensils. Its also good for carrying extra water to the summit.

And I was wondering if carrying 2 cameras, tripod, and extra lenses on hikes was going a little overboard. I guess I'm not as crazy as I thought...oh goodie!
