Brian and I were waiting all week for Saturday to roll around and a good hike. We relaxed Sat morning and slept in til 7:30am, finally rolled out of bed, did some things around the house, had breakfast, got the packs ready and headed out.
We would start this hike from Whitface Club and the the Lake Trail to the Two Brook Trail to the summit of Moose. We hit the trail around 11:30am, a nice early start time. :)
The Lake Trail was hard to follow at times, but we managed to keep to it to the jct with the Two Brook. Two Brook starts out nice and follows the brook. Brian and I took a nice break by the brook to enjoy the warm sun and babble of the brook. This trail starts out in a hardwood forest and soon enters the conifers. The forest is absolutely beautiful, very hobbit like and very different from the high peaks. The forest reminds one of the Maine forest; I totally loved it. As we gained elevation the trail was very hard to follow, not maintained or used very much. The blow down was tremendous and the trial was more like a bushwhack, crawling up and over huge blow down of massive pines. Have to love a pine trap. After what seemed like a long time we finally hit the jct with the Loch Bonnie Trail. Well, the book said the last half mile was steep and it didn't lie. Steep and beautiful, with great rocky cliffs and shoots with some iciles still hanging around and snow on the ground.
The summit was worth the climb as we sat in the warm sunshine and soaked in the views of Lake Placid and the high peaks!!! What a great day to be out in the mountains enjoying the warm sunshine, spectacular views and Brian's company. Well time to put the boots back on and make our way down. We decided to do this as a loop hike and head down the Loch Bonnie Trail. Again, the first half mile is very steep. The Loch Bonnie trail was in pretty good condition until we hit the lower reaches of it. Down low the trail was hard to follow and muddy as it followed the drainage. Back to the Lake Trail and finally to the jeep.
I wouldn't recommend the Two Brook Trial unless you like to bushwhack and crawl over blowdown, but the Loch Bonnie trail is very beautiful and filled with good climbing.
We will get pictures up some time soon. :)
A great day in the mountains with my sweetie, spectacular views and great climbing.
I love my neighborhood!!
