On Saturday, April 10th, I had a chance to get together with some hiking buddies I have not seen in a while, Dave, Karen and Rich. We got together to hike Slide Mtn in the Catskills. I also convinced my non-hiking friend from work to go along. She had gone with me for my final W46 on Sawteeth, up the scenic trail. I told her that Slide Mtn would be a breeze after that!
We got to the parking area and there was a group getting ready to head up. There were a couple dogs with them so my black lab, Saranac, was having a grand time! Only problem was trying to keep Saranac from going with the other group! About the time we were all ready to go, I saw the ladies coming back. They said the stream was too high and they weren’t prepared to get wet. They were going to find a drier hike.
My co-worker, Tiff, looks at me and says “I’m not prepared to get wet either!” After reassuring her it would be fine and we weren’t going to get wet, we set off on the trail. Shortly we got to the brook and it was no problem to cross on the rocks. Even Tiff made it, although she was hesitant at first.

We brought snowshoes, microspikes and even butt-sliders, just in case! There was still quite a bit of snow near the summit. We saw some post holes about 4’ deep but didn’t have any trouble walking on top of the snow ourselves that day. That is except for when Dave was turned around talking to us and then stepped right in one of those deep post holes and almost disappeared!
I had hoped to get a chance to use my butt-slider once more before next winter but the trail was pretty bumpy and flat where there still was snow and on the steeper sections most of the snow had melted away. Oh well. We enjoyed a nice lunch at the summit that included some special Irish cheese. Mmmmm… good stuff, even Saranac wanted some!

It was a wonderful day and great to see some friends I haven’t seen in a while. My friend Tiff enjoyed this hike much more than the scenic trail up Sawteeth in the winter! She was even still smiling at the end. Funny thing is….she was talking about how she’d like to do some more hikes and that she wants to do them in the winter! I think I not only turned her into a hiker, but a winter hiker!
