Left one car at RT.42 and started from Devils Path. I barebooted to summit ND, John c. used crampons. After that it was crampons the rest of the way. Nice leasurly trip. Took a slight miscaluation on the way down from Sherril and ended up in THE DRAINAGE instead of on the ridge, once again the shortest route between two points is not a straight line. Enjoyable cold weather hike.Tony,I still didn't find those viewpoints, next time?

Hey Jim, found the drainage? I know what you're talking about, my daughter and I did the same thing last time. We just criss crossed and followed the stream all the way back, a pretty tough route...BTW I changed my plans and hiked early Sun.morning. Did a loup of Balsam Lake Mtn. from Quaker clearing. Had to get back to Jersey early.

Oops... I know the drainage-avoidance-matters, otherwise known as DAM. I think the altimeter is a great tool to avoid DAM, as you can gauge how much feet from the summit to the col and once you pass it and still see a descent, you know you've missed the col/ridge between the two peaks.
Fir/Big Indian is like that, it's not necessarily a straight line between the peaks, you have to aim for the col, then take another bearing to the other summit. Otherwise, it's a lot of side-hilling and may be steep.

Hey Jay, you're right about the altimeter being a big help, and I have one but usually forget to look at it until after making a big mistake. Smart huh?
